Kindergarten starts an exciting adventure for your child. WRDSB schools welcome all children and are committed to providing every student a safe and welcoming environment. Any child who was born in 2017 or 2018 is eligible to attend Kindergarten. We encourage families to register online at wrdsb.ca/register.
Our Kindergarten classrooms are active environments where children learn with their bodies, minds and hearts. The program is designed to meet the needs of young children who learn in a variety of ways and at different rates because each child is unique!
Our Kindergarten environment, both in the classroom and outdoors, is filled with enriching opportunities to play, wonder and learn. Throughout the day, children are encouraged to develop their creativity and imagination, to demonstrate early reading and writing behaviours, to design, build and construct, to draw and paint, to listen and talk, and to question and be curious. But most importantly to play, as play is essential to children’s healthy development and learning. Play enables children to develop a greater understanding of their environment and to make sense of the world.
In the Kindergarten Program, the classroom environment, teaching, learning, and assessment are structured around four “frames”, or ways of being. The frames – Belonging and Contributing, Self-Regulation and Well-Being, Demonstrating Literacy and Mathematics Behaviours, and Problem-Solving and Innovating, are ways of being that children naturally seek for themselves. What children learn in connection with all Four Frames lays the foundation for developing traits and attitudes they will need to become active, contributing and healthy, engaged individuals who take responsibility for their own and other’s well-being.
Staff and educators at the Waterloo Region District School Board always provide a welcoming and supportive transition to Kindergarten. We strive to provide a place where children explore, play and laugh, in a positive environment that can only be created when you have a group of staff that genuinely love what they do.
